Cannonier vs. Imavov took place June 8 at the KC Yum! Center in Louisville, Kentucky. Jared Cannonier (17-7) and Nassourdine Imavov (13-5, 1 no-contest) squared off in the the main event clash. The fight aired live on ESPN.

Round 1

The “U-S-A!” chants begin before the fight even starts. Imavov is huge and comes out to the middle, Cannonier ceding the ground but lands a good right early to start things off. Imavov flashing the jab and Cannonier misses a huge counter. He’s throwing with intent early.

Cannonier lands a few good calf kicks. These two are right to it early. Imavov is trying to move around, show angles, and Cannonier is swinging hard and chopping legs. Then he grabs a clinch as Imavov moves and bullies Imavov to the fence.

And there’s the takedown. Imavov trying to get back up and he does after some time but eats an elbow on the break. Imavov tries to land a knee as Cannonier steps in but misses and Herzog stops the action to warn Imavov about sticking his fingers out. Herzog not playing tonight.

Cannonier lands another calf kick. Imavov lands a good left hook but eats another leg kick. Cannonier is chopping that wood in there. But Imavov ties up the lead hand and then lands an elbow over it, and a knee to the body. Cannonier breaks then lands a 1-2.

Imavov catches a low kick from Cannonier and dumps him but doesn’t follow Cannonier down and he stands up right into a clinchm pushing Imavov back. We are clinch fighting now. Positional work and some short knees and punches. Cannonier holding position and we’re in a bit of a stalemate with less than a minute left.

Annnnd we end there as well. Uneventful last stretch of that round.

Round 2

Back to the middle and Cannonier is bouncing around the outside, then fires a kick early. Sticking to his plan. Imavov counters the next one with a hard jab. Then another. Herzog warns him about the fingers again.

Imavov counters a step in from Cannonier but doesn’t land clean. Then lands a sharp left hook, but Cannonier gets it back with a pair of hooks. Cannonier being more aggressive and Imavov tumbles backward after a collisions. Cannonier right after him and again we clinch along the fence.

Imavov with good position and creates a break, but misses the nasty left hand he planned. Cannonier starts jabbing to move Imavov around and then works into the clinch again, pushing Imavov to the cage.

Imavov again showing good positioning and then lands some good elbows as Cannonier’s head dips down. Cannonier is staying sticky in there but not accomplishing much actual work. Imavov is scoring more at this point but it’s sparing as well.

Imavov finally pivots off and throws a right hand. Then another. And now he’s pressing the action and Cannonier’s mouthpiece drops out. Herzog breaks and inserts and Cannonier lands another calf kick.

Good 1-2 from Imavov and he’s backing Cannonier up freely now. He’s on the attack and Cannonier tries to back him off with a big right hand. It doesn’t but a clinch does stymie the action. But Imavov breaks this one early and rips a good combination just before the horn.

Round 3

Imavov came on strong at the end of that round. Not sure if Cannonier’s getting tired from all the clinching or if Imavov just decided to pedal down, but Cannonier can’t let him build too much momentum.

Salty right hand from Cannonier to start the round, over the guard. And he’s the one coming forward early here. Whoever is moving forward is winning, as Imavov misses a counter, then lands a 1-2 as he steps in.

Ooo. Imavov shucks past a clinch attempt from Cannonier and slips to the waistlock. He moves Cannonier to the fence and then drags him down. Cannonier up on a knee and trying to break the grip. He stands but Imavov still holding this space against the fence.

Cannonier turns in and then reverses position but Imavov moving. Cannonier having to work hard to keep this position and can’t as Imavov pivots off and lands a right hand when Cannonier goes for a calf kick.

Imavov does it again. He’s timing that every time now. And again. But Cannonier goes three on the right side with hooks into uppercuts and that gets him. Halfway mark and Cannonier gets another clinch.

Cannonier is just holding this position with a high underhook and head position but still not doing too much. This is just a tiring way to fight and Imavov keeps getting an elbow in well to bridge. He breaks and rips a body kick.

Cannonier lands a NICE shifting right hook as Imavov slipped but he ate it. Imavov counters the leg kick again then a check hook. He’s settling in but misses a right hand as Cannonier rushes into a clinch again. The boo birds start to appear, and honestly, I expected them sooner.

Imavov breaks the clinch just before the round and then lands a few decent shots, just missing a head kick before the horn.

Round 4

Round 3 is a total toss-up. I thought Imavov landed the cleaner shots for the most part, but it was a close one. Could easily be the swing round for this fight. Numerically, Cannonier apparently won it.

Imavov holding the center and lands a right hand as Cannonier bounces around. Then Cannonier goes for a spinning elbow that actually lands, but it’s muted because Imavov stepped in to grab the back. Cannonier gets pushed to the fence but spins and breaks soon.

Imavov jabbing and moving forward, Cannonier jabbing and circling, then swinging hard occassionally.

OHHHH! Imavov hurt him! Cannonier got caught in no-man’s land and Imavov landed a perfect right hook! Cannonier on wobbly legs but he’s still up!

Cannonier running away but Imavov on him and trying to pour action on and Jason Herzog steps in!

Oh no. That was a bad stoppage. Cannonier was in trouble for sure, but he was still up, moving, defending himself, and Herzog jumped in without a huge pile off offense.
